Coahuila is a large state in northern Mexico, bordering Texas, largely covered by the Chihuahuan Desert and cut by the Sierra Madre Oriental ranges. Saltillo, the capital, is about 85 km from Monterrey, at more than 1,500 meters elevation, and has a stone baroque cathedral, the Museo del Desierto, and a tradition of colorful wool sarapes.
To the west, Parras de la Fuente is an oasis of walnut trees and vineyards in the middle of the desert, where the oldest winery in the Americas still operating was founded in 1597. The town is a Pueblo Mágico with a colonial center and the church of Santo Madero on a hill.
Farther north, the Cuatro Ciénegas valley is a protected area with hundreds of turquoise-blue pools, rivers and lagoons in the middle of the desert, home to species found nowhere else, and white gypsum dunes. Scientists study its bacteria as a portrait of early life on Earth.
Distances are large: Cuatro Ciénegas is about 270 km from Saltillo. The region follows UTC−6, Mexico’s Central Time, with no daylight saving time.
