About Historic Center of Parras
Parras de la Fuente’s center is organized around the Plaza de Armas, with adobe and stone mansions, arcades and tree-lined streets carrying channels fed by the springs that created the oasis. The parish of Santa María de las Parras and the temple of San Ignacio de Loyola, connected to the old Jesuit mission, date from the colonial period.
Parras is the birthplace of Francisco I. Madero, who started the Mexican Revolution in 1910. The town’s shops sell walnut sweets, milk- and fruit-based sweets made from old recipes, as well as wine and brandy from the valley.
Near the center there are ponds and reservoirs of spring water that function as bathing spots in the hot months. The wineries lie on the outskirts, including the Hacienda San Lorenzo winery, founded in 1597.
