About Poza Azul
La Poza Azul is located in the Cuatro Ciénegas Flora and Fauna Protection Area, south of the town. It is a pool fed by underground springs, with very clear water that changes from turquoise-blue to deep blue depending on the depth, surrounded by low vegetation and the dry desert ranges.
The valley has hundreds of pools like this, and they are home to species found nowhere else, such as the Coahuila hinge-back turtle and fish of several species. Scientists study the bacterial communities in the pools, the stromatolites, which resemble Earth’s earliest life forms.
To protect this environment, bathing in La Poza Azul is prohibited. Boardwalks and viewpoints allow you to see the water up close, with signs that explain the valley’s ecology.
