About Gypsum Dunes
The Gypsum Dunes lie southwest of the town of Cuatro Ciénegas, about 18 km away, at the end of a dirt road. They cover roughly 800 hectares of white gypsum sand, formed by crystals deposited when water from ancient lagoons evaporated. This type of dune is rare in the world.
The white sand remains cool to the touch even under the sun and reflects a lot of light. Between the dunes there are larger formations, such as the so-called El Castillo, about 12 meters high, and the valley ranges appear in the background. Gypsum extraction was banned in 1996 to protect the area.
Visits are done on foot, walking across the sand, usually with a guide.
