About English Cemetery (Real del Monte)
The English Cemetery was opened in the mid-19th century to bury the miners and families who came from Cornwall, in southwest England, to work the mines of Real del Monte. It is on a hill covered with pines and oyameles above the town.
The tombs have headstones with inscriptions in English, and local tradition says most are oriented toward England. Among the graves is that of a 19th-century English clown, often pointed out by guides.
The path to the cemetery climbs along stone streets and passes old houses, offering views of the town’s red roofs. In the mist, the place becomes quiet and dimly lit.
