About Mina de Acosta Site Museum
The Acosta Mine is in the San José de Acosta neighborhood, on the outskirts of Real del Monte, and operated from 1727 to 1985. It was one of the richest mines in the region and, in the 19th century, received the machinery and miners brought from Cornwall by the English company that worked the range.
The museum occupies the surface facilities: the engine house, the shaft tower, the workshop, the storage buildings and the superintendent’s house, in English style. The guided visit begins with the history of mining in the region and continues into a tunnel, which visitors explore wearing a helmet, carrying a flashlight and a cape.
From the mine courtyard you can see the valley and the roofs of Real del Monte. The visit also shows the miners’ working conditions and the origin of the town’s English traditions.
