About El Chico National Park
El Chico National Park is in the Pachuca mountain range, about 20 km from the city, and protects oyamel, pine and oak forests between 2,300 and 3,000 meters of elevation. The area was set aside as a forest reserve in 1898 and is one of the country's oldest national parks.
The park has large rock formations, such as Las Ventanas, Las Monjas and La Peña del Cuervo, with viewpoints over the valleys. Marked trails lead to the rocks, reservoirs and picnic areas, and some formations are used for climbing.
In the middle of the park is Mineral del Chico, a mining village with steep-roofed houses and an 18th-century church, with trout restaurants and cabins.
