About Prismas Basálticos de Santa María Regla

The Basalt Prisms are in Santa María Regla, about 5 km from downtown Huasca, on a ravine with a river running through it. The canyon walls are made of basalt columns, generally six-sided, formed by the slow cooling of lava a few million years ago. Some reach about 40 meters.

Water falls in waterfalls between the columns. The park has stairs and walkways down to the canyon floor, lookout points and a suspension bridge that passes over the formations. The German Alexander von Humboldt described the prisms when he visited the region in 1803.

The site is part of the UNESCO Global Geopark Comarca Minera and is on ejido land of Santa María Regla, with trout restaurants and shops at the entrance.
