About Malecón and Whale Hill
Puerto Peñasco’s malecón is in the Old Port, the city’s oldest neighborhood, where the first shrimp fishers arrived in the 1920s. The boardwalk runs along the sea with seafood restaurants, craft shops and the comings and goings of fishing boats.
Behind the neighborhood rises Cerro de la Ballena, a hill of dark volcanic rock that gave the town the name Rocky Point. A street climbs to the lighthouse and a viewpoint with views of the harbor, the beaches and the gulf.
At low tide, the rocks around the hill are exposed and form pools with crabs, octopus, starfish and anemones. You must look without removing the animals and return before the tide rises.
