at your own pace.

Puerto Peñasco is in northern Sonora on the coast of the Gulf of California, also called the Sea of Cortez, about 100 km from the Arizona border. It began as a shrimp-fishing village in the 1920s and today is the closest beach to Phoenix and Tucson, known in English as Rocky Point.

The town has long pale-sand beaches, like Sandy Beach, a malecón at the old fishing port and Cerro de la Ballena, a volcanic rock hill with a lighthouse and views of the gulf. Tides are large: at low tide the sea retreats and leaves rock pools with crabs, starfish and other animals.

About 30 km to the north begins the El Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013. It is a volcanic shield with hundreds of cones, black lava fields and giant craters like El Elegante, and the largest field of active dunes in North America.

The desert is extreme: from June to September daytime temperatures exceed 40 °C. Puerto Peñasco follows the UTC−7 time zone, Mexico’s Pacific Time, year-round with no daylight saving time.
