About Cathedral Basilica of Durango
The minor basilica of the Immaculate Conception dominates Durango’s Plaza de Armas. Construction began in 1695 and extended through much of the 18th century, which is why the façade mixes baroque elements with neoclassical details in the towers.
The main stone façade features Solomonic columns, niches with saints and reliefs, and the two tall towers are visible from almost the entire centre. Inside, the nave contains altars and a carved wooden choir, and the sacristy holds colonial paintings.
A local legend tells of a nun who appears at night in one of the towers, a tale told by guides on the centre’s night tours. At night the cathedral is illuminated.
