About Ammassalik Museum
The Ammassalik Museum occupies Tasiilaq’s first church, designed in 1903 and consecrated in 1908, on a high point overlooking the harbor. The museum opened in 1990, when the town began to use a new church.
The collection shows the culture of the Tunumiit, the Inuit of the east coast, who lived isolated from the rest of Greenland until the late 19th century. There are wooden masks, old and new tupilaks, carved figures linked to the region’s stories, hunting tools and kayaks.
Works by regional artists and old photographs complete the exhibition and show how life changed after the arrival of the trading post in 1894.
The museum helps explain the differences between the east and west of the country—in language, clothing and traditions.
