About Sermilik Fjord
The Sermilik fjord lies west of the island of Ammassalik and receives ice from several glaciers that flow down from the ice cap, including the Helheim glacier. It is one of the eastern fjords with the most icebergs, some enormous, which drift slowly toward the sea.
Boat trips depart from Tasiilaq and Kulusuk and navigate among the icebergs at the fjord’s entrance. Some continue to shore settlements, such as Tiniteqilaaq, one of the region’s most visited places, with a view of the ice.
Along the way it is common to see seals and, in summer, whales. Navigation depends on ice: in months when the fjord is frozen, access is by sled or snowmobile.
There are also boat trips to the fronts of other glaciers in nearby fjords, depending on how the ice permits each summer.
