About Kulusuk Church

Kulusuk’s church is in the settlement, close to the water, and is the island’s best-known building. It was built in 1908 with timber from a ship that ran aground nearby, an origin that locals proudly tell visitors.

It is a simple wooden painted building, with coloured stained glass that brightens the interior on clear days. From outside you can see the colourful houses scattered over the rocks and, in summer, the icebergs that pass before the island.

Beside it, the cemetery has white crosses on the rocky ground, facing the sea, as in many Greenland settlements.

Kulusuk is also known for the drum dance, an Inuit singing-and-dancing tradition that survived missionary prohibition. Sometimes locals perform the dance for visiting groups.
