About Lyngmark Glacier (Lyngmarksbræ)

Lyngmarksbræen, the Lyngmark glacier, covers the high basalt mountains just above Qeqertarsuaq, at about 900 meters elevation. It is a small ice cap of roughly 10 km, much smaller than the large inland glaciers, but only a few hours’ walk from town.

The ascent, over rocky and snowy slopes, takes three to four hours and requires preparation. From the top you can see the town, the basalt coast and all of Disko Bay; on clear days the icebergs at the entrance to the Ilulissat Icefjord appear far away, nearly 100 km off.

Because the snow does not melt at the top, the dogs work there even in the warm months, in an excursion that does not exist anywhere else in the country. The dogs and drivers go up and operate there during the season.

There are also snowmobile trips to the high area and, in winter, sled tours that depart from the town itself.
