About Nuuk Fjord
The Nuuk fjord (Nuup Kangerlua) begins just outside the town and stretches more than a hundred kilometers inland, split into arms by large islands. It is one of the largest fjord systems on the west coast.
Boat trips depart from Nuuk’s harbor and range from a few hours to a full day. The shorter tours circle near town, with views of the mountain Sermitsiaq. The longer ones go to the inner reaches of the fjord, where the water fills with chunks of ice, and even to the settlement of Kapisillit.
Along the way are Qooqqut, a valley with summer cottages where many residents spend weekends, and ruins of Norse farms, showing that settlers from Iceland also lived on this part of the coast.
In the warm season there are specific departures to watch humpback whales, which often feed at the mouth of the fjord.
