About Ilulissat Icefjord Centre

The Ilulissat Icefjord Centre sits on the edge of town where the Sermermiut valley begins. The long, low building has a curved roof that can be walked on and serves as a viewpoint over the bay and the fjord entrance.

Inside, an exhibition explains how the ice cap forms, why the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier moves so fast and how icebergs reach Disko Bay. Another section tells the story of people who lived in the region, from ancient cultures to today’s residents, and the work of scientists who study the fjord.

The centre is the gateway to the UNESCO trails: the Sermermiut boardwalk and the longer colour‑marked trails start beside the building. There are also restrooms and information about weather and trail conditions.

It’s worth stopping at the centre before a walk to understand what you will see, or afterwards to rest and warm up.
