About Walkway Over the Hudson
Poughkeepsie’s railroad bridge was completed in 1889 and at the time was one of the largest in the world, carrying freight trains between New England and the Midwest. In 1974 a fire destroyed part of the deck and the line was abandoned. After decades of neglect, the structure was restored and reopened in 2009 as a pedestrian walkway within a state park.
About 2 km in length including the approaches, it is one of the longest elevated walkways in the world. The path, wide and level, sits roughly 65 meters above the water and offers views of the valley, the city of Poughkeepsie, the boats and, to the south, the neighboring suspension bridge.
Along the walkway there are panels about the history of the bridge and the railroad, benches and viewing platforms. In Poughkeepsie a glass elevator connects the deck to the riverfront park, near the train station.
The walkway is used for walking, running and cycling, and hosts events on some summer evenings.
