About Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site

The Vanderbilt Mansion was built between 1896 and 1899 for Frederick Vanderbilt, grandson of the railroad magnate, and his wife Louise, by the firm McKim, Mead & White. The light-stone house with columns on the façade has 54 rooms and was used by the couple as a seasonal country residence in spring and fall.

The interior preserves period furniture, tapestries and artworks in a blend of European styles that reflects the taste of wealthy American families in the Gilded Age. The owners’ bedrooms imitate French palace rooms.

The formal Italian-style gardens, on several levels, have been restored with flower beds and a rose garden. The roughly 85-hectare grounds include lawns that slope toward the river, mature trees and viewpoints with views of the Hudson and the Catskill Mountains in the distance.

The property is a national historic site; house tours are guided, and the gardens and grounds are open to the public.
