About Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site (Springwood)
Springwood was Franklin D. Roosevelt’s home from his birth in 1882, in a second-floor room, until his death in 1945. The family estate on a Hudson-side slope includes the main house, remodeled by him, stables, woodland trails, and the rose garden where he and Eleanor Roosevelt are buried.
House tours are led by park rangers. You can see the room where he received foreign leaders, the office, his childhood bedroom, the elevators and ramps adapted for the wheelchair he used after polio, and personal belongings.
Next door is the presidential library and museum, opened by Roosevelt in 1941, the first of its kind in the country. The museum covers the Great Depression, the New Deal and World War II with documents, photos, and the car he drove with hand controls. A section is devoted to Eleanor Roosevelt.
A few kilometers away is Val-Kill, Eleanor’s country home, another national historic site open to visitors, and Top Cottage, a retreat he built for himself.
