About Waterfront Park

Waterfront Park occupies the shore of Lake Champlain at the foot of downtown Burlington, on land that used to be railroad and mill yards. It has open lawns, a boardwalk with wooden swings facing the water and piers where sightseeing boats depart. Across the lake to the west are the Adirondack Mountains in New York State, behind which the sun sets.

At the tip of the waterfront is ECHO, a science center dedicated to Lake Champlain, with aquariums of lake fish, interactive exhibits about the water and regional wildlife, and a terrace over the water. It’s a popular activity for families.

The Burlington bike path runs along the shore for several kilometers. To the north it becomes the Island Line Trail and continues for about 6 km on an old rail causeway built out into the lake, heading toward the Champlain Islands. In the middle of the causeway there is a boat passage for boats; in summer a small bike ferry operates there when available.

The lake has the legend of Champ, a creature said to live in its waters that has become an informal regional mascot.

How much time to set aside

Best time

Late afternoon, for the sunset behind the Adirondacks, especially from June to September. The bike path and the causeway are best in the morning, with less wind.

How to get there

It lies at the foot of Main Street and College Street, about 1 km from Church Street, and next to Union Station. There are bike rentals near the waterfront in summer. The park has no entrance fee; ECHO charges admission—check the current rates.

Tip

To cycle out onto the causeway, rent your bike early and bring water and a jacket: it’s very windy over the water. Check in advance whether the bike ferry is operating if you plan to continue to the islands.
