About Shelburne Museum
The Shelburne Museum was founded in 1947 by Electra Havemeyer Webb, a collector of American folk art and the daughter of a family that assembled impressionist paintings in New York. She transported houses, barns, a schoolhouse, a church and other historic New England and New York structures to a property in Shelburne to house the collections.
The museum comprises roughly 40 buildings set in parkland with gardens. Among the best known are the Ticonderoga, a 1906 paddle-wheel steamboat that sailed on Lake Champlain and was moved overland to the museum, the 1845 covered bridge and the 1901 round barn, a rare example of that type of construction in Vermont.
Collections include hundreds of patchwork quilts, wooden bird decoys, weather vanes, toys, carriages and furniture. In a reconstructed neoclassical house are paintings and pastels by Monet, Degas, Manet and other impressionists from the family collection.
A modern building for temporary exhibitions operates part of the year, and the gardens bloom from late spring into early fall.
