About Church Street Marketplace

Church Street Marketplace takes up four blocks of Burlington’s main downtown street, closed to cars since the early 1980s. The brick paving, flower beds and benches make it the city’s town square, a place to stroll, eat and meet people year-round.

At the north end stands the First Unitarian Universalist Church, from 1816, the church that gave the street its name. Along the blocks are 19th-century brick commercial buildings, shops, bookstores and cafés, and in summer restaurants set tables out along the street. Musicians and street performers play on pleasant afternoons.

The street hosts festivals and events, and on nearby streets there is a seasonal Saturday farmers’ market with cheeses, maple syrup and local produce.

From Church Street the streets slope down toward Lake Champlain: within a ten-minute walk you reach the waterfront and Waterfront Park.
