About Saint Louis Art Museum
The Saint Louis Art Museum occupies the Palace of Fine Arts built for the 1904 World’s Fair, atop a hill in Forest Park, with the equestrian statue of Saint Louis in front. A modern wing by David Chipperfield expanded the museum in 2013.
The collections range from ancient Egyptian and Greek art to contemporary work, with European paintings by Monet, Van Gogh and Matisse, American art, and art from Asia, Africa and Oceania, as well as Indigenous art of the Americas. The museum holds the largest collection in the world of the German painter Max Beckmann.
From the museum’s front, the steps descend to the Grand Basin, the park’s lake, offering one of Forest Park’s best-known views.
