About Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis
The Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis was consecrated in 1914 in the Central West End neighborhood, with a stone Romanesque-style exterior and a green dome. The interior mixes Byzantine and Romanesque elements.
The main highlight is the mosaics, which cover domes, arches and walls with millions of tiny colored glass and gold tesserae, a work carried out over roughly 75 years. It is one of the largest mosaic collections in the world, depicting scenes from the Bible and the history of the Church in Missouri. A small museum in the basement explains how the mosaics were made.
Pope John Paul II visited the cathedral in 1999, and the church remains the seat of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, with daily masses.
