About Rio Grande Gorge Bridge

The bridge over the Rio Grande gorge is about 16 km northwest of Taos on US-64. Completed in 1965, it is a steel truss bridge that spans the gorge roughly 200 meters above the river, one of the highest road bridges in the United States.

The gorge was cut by the Rio Grande through a basalt plain formed by lava flows, and it seems to appear suddenly in the middle of the flat plateau. From the pedestrian walkway on either side of the bridge, the view drops to the dark walls and the river far below, with the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the background.

There are parking areas, rest spots and craft vendors at the bridge ends. A trail follows the rim of the gorge to the west, and the area is part of the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument.

A few kilometers away, the experimental Earthship houses—built with reused materials—are visited by architecture enthusiasts.
