About Canyon Road
Canyon Road was for centuries the dirt path used by Indigenous peoples and later by Spanish settlers to climb into the mountains through the Santa Fe River valley. The adobe houses built along it, many from the 19th century, were occupied in the early 20th century by artists who moved to the town, and the street became the center of the galleries.
Today, along about 1 km, there are dozens of art galleries—Western painting and Indigenous art to contemporary art, sculpture, and jewelry—plus studios where artists work. Many occupy houses with courtyards and gardens, where sculptures are displayed outdoors.
The street is narrow and gently rises from Paseo de Peralta, near downtown. Restaurants and cafés line the way, and Friday evenings often feature exhibition openings.
On Christmas Eve, Canyon Road is filled with luminarias and small bonfires on the sidewalks, and residents and visitors walk along it singing.
