About Sandia Peak Tramway

The Sandia Peak Tramway opened in 1966 and connects Albuquerque’s northeast edge to the top of the Sandia Mountains. In about 15 minutes, the cabins ride nearly 4.3 km of cable over canyons and granite cliffs, from the base at roughly 2,000 m to the summit above 3,100 m. It is one of the longest aerial trams in the United States.

Along the way, vegetation changes from desert to pine and fir forests. From the top, you can see the Rio Grande valley, the city, and, on clear days, mountains more than a hundred kilometers away. At the summit there is a restaurant, a viewpoint, and ridge trails that in winter provide access to the small ski area on the other side of the mountain.

The name Sandia, meaning watermelon in Spanish, is said to come from the pinkish color the mountains take on at sunset.

The tram closes for maintenance for a few weeks each year, usually in spring and autumn, and on very windy days. At the summit the temperature is usually much lower than in the city.
