About Indian Pueblo Cultural Center
The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center opened in 1976 and is owned by the 19 Indigenous pueblos of New Mexico, communities that have lived for centuries in the Rio Grande valley and its surroundings. The museum tells the story of these peoples in their own voice, from life before the arrival of the Spanish to the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, which expelled the colonizers for twelve years, and up to the present day.
Galleries display pottery, jewelry, textiles, and paintings from each pueblo, showing the stylistic differences among them, along with temporary exhibitions by contemporary artists. The building was inspired by the semicircular form of Pueblo Bonito in Chaco Canyon.
On weekends for much of the year, pueblo groups perform traditional dances in the central courtyard, with explanations about each one. The center’s restaurant serves pueblo dishes, such as green chile stew and oven-baked bread.
The center is a good introduction before visiting a pueblo, such as Taos Pueblo, because it explains visiting rules and how to show respect for ceremonies.
