About San Antonio River Walk
The River Walk, the Paseo del Río, is a series of sidewalks along the San Antonio River, one level below the streets of downtown. It was conceived by architect Robert Hugman in the late 1920s after a flood, and built in the late 1930s, with stone bridges, stairs and gardens.
The central loop passes hotels, restaurants with waterside tables and shops, and connects the convention center to Market Square. From there, the promenade extends about 24 km: north to the art museum and the former Pearl brewery complex; south to the Spanish missions via the Mission Reach section, with nature trails.
Guided tour boats run the central stretch, telling the city’s history, and also function as transport between points. At the end of the year, the trees and bridges are illuminated.
