About Market Square

The Market Square, or El Mercado, occupies three blocks on the west side of downtown San Antonio. It is considered the largest Mexican market in the United States and keeps the city’s ties to Mexico alive.

In the Market building and the Farmers Market Plaza there are dozens of shops selling crafts, clothing, pottery, jewelry, hats and Mexican sweets. In the plaza, restaurants serve Tex‑Mex and Mexican dishes, and mariachis and dance groups perform, especially on weekends. The market hosts city calendar celebrations, such as Cinco de Mayo and Day of the Dead.

The place is lively day and night and is a few minutes’ walk from the River Walk and the Cathedral of San Fernando.
