About San Fernando Cathedral
San Fernando Cathedral has stood on Main Plaza, San Antonio’s main square, since the village was founded by settlers from the Canary Islands in 1731. It is one of the oldest continuously used Catholic churches in the United States.
The oldest part, from the 18th century, forms the current sanctuary, and the neo-Gothic nave with towers was added in the 19th century. Inside, a gilded altarpiece and a sarcophagus containing remains attributed to the defenders of the Alamo recall the city’s history.
On some evenings of the week, the façade is the site of a light-and-sound projection that tells the story of San Antonio, visible from the plaza.
