About Portland Observatory
The Portland Observatory was built in 1807 by Captain Lemuel Moody atop Munjoy Hill, one of the highest points of the peninsula. The octagonal wooden tower, about 26 meters tall with seven levels, served as a signal station: from the top, using a telescope, Moody could spot ships still far from shore and hoist flags that told merchants which vessel was arriving, hours before it docked.
The service operated until 1923, when radio made the tower unnecessary. It is the only signal station of this kind remaining in the United States and is a National Historic Landmark. The structure has been restored and is maintained by the city and a local preservation association.
On the guided tour you climb the interior stairs to the cupola, passing exhibits about the tower’s construction and the flag system. From the top you can see the harbor, the islands of Casco Bay, downtown Portland and, on clear days, the White Mountains to the west.
The tower sits among the houses of Munjoy Hill, near the Eastern Promenade, a waterfront park with lawns and a shoreline trail.
