About Chapel of the Holy Cross

The Chapel of the Holy Cross was conceived by sculptor Marguerite Brunswig Staude, who wanted a church with modern lines, and was completed in 1956. It is set between two red sandstone formations above the valley and belongs to the Catholic Diocese of Phoenix.

The façade is dominated by a large concrete cross that serves as the building’s structure. Inside, the nave is small and simple, with pews facing a tall glass window that frames the Sedona valley and the surrounding rocks. The chapel has won architectural awards and is regarded by many as a landmark of modern religious architecture in the country.

A ramp rises from the parking area to the entrance, with viewpoints over nearby rocks, such as the formations nicknamed Madonna and Child and Two Nuns. In the basement, a shop sells religious items.

The chapel is a place of prayer: visitors should remain quiet inside the nave.
