About Taliesin West

Frank Lloyd Wright began building Taliesin West in 1937 at the foot of the McDowell Mountains, then far from everything, to be the winter home and camp of his architecture school. Wright himself and his apprentices raised the buildings with desert stones set in wooden forms with concrete, the so-called desert masonry, and covered parts of them with canvas to let in diffused light.

The complex was inscribed by UNESCO in 2019, together with seven other works by Wright, under the entry The 20th-Century Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. The visit shows the design studio, the living room with furniture designed by the architect, the theater, the music room and the terraces, from which you can see the Phoenix valley.

The most common visit is an audio tour at your own pace through the historical core. There are also longer guided tours, evening tours and visits to the shelters the apprentices built in the desert, offered part of the year. The foundation that cares for the site sets the schedules according to the season.

The house is still the headquarters of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, and the buildings undergo constant restoration.
