About Heard Museum
The Heard Museum was founded in 1929 by Dwight and Maie Heard to house their collection of Indigenous art, in a Spanish Colonial–style building with courtyards and fountains in downtown Phoenix. It grew into one of the United States’ leading museums on Native peoples, with more than 40,000 objects and programs developed with the communities themselves.
Permanent galleries display pottery from the pueblos of New Mexico and Arizona, Navajo rugs, basketry, silver and turquoise jewelry, and the large collection of kachina dolls, carved by Hopi artists to represent spirits from their ceremonies. One exhibition addresses the boarding schools for Indigenous children, a painful chapter in the country’s history, with former students’ testimonies.
There are temporary exhibitions of contemporary Indigenous art and, each year, an art fair and a hoop-dance competition that bring together artists from many nations.
The museum shop sells items made by Indigenous artists, with the origin identified.
