By car via US-158, about 130 km from Norfolk (ORF) airport and 320 km from Raleigh (RDU). The Wright Memorial Bridge links the Outer Banks to the mainland to the north.

Half a day for the Wright brothers memorial; two or three days to combine with beach time, Jockey's Ridge and Manteo.
When to go
From May to October. On December 17, the anniversary of the first flight, the memorial often holds a ceremony. Summer is busier; September and October are quieter, but still within hurricane season.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
Yes. US-158 and NC-12 connect island towns, and distances are long to walk. Drivers keep to the right.
