About Philbrook Museum of Art
Villa Philbrook was built in the 1920s for oilman Waite Phillips and his family, inspired by Italian country houses, with 72 rooms. In 1938, the Phillips family donated the house to the city, and it opened as an art museum the following year.
The collection includes European, American, Native American, African and Asian art, from Renaissance paintings to modern and contemporary works, displayed through the house's salons and an added wing. The interior architecture, with painted ceilings, fireplaces and staircases, is part of the visit.
The gardens, about 10 hectares, descend from the house in terraces, with a reflecting pool, a classical pavilion, formal beds and wilder areas of woodland, a stream and a kitchen garden. They are as sought after as the galleries.
The museum also runs Philbrook Downtown in the Tulsa Arts District, with modern and contemporary art exhibitions.
