About Greenwood Rising (Black Wall Street History Center)

In the early 20th century, the Greenwood district in north Tulsa gathered hundreds of Black-owned businesses, from shops and hotels to professional offices, cinemas and newspapers. The prosperity earned it the nickname Black Wall Street.

Between May 31 and June 1, 1921, white mobs attacked the neighborhood, killed residents and burned about 35 blocks. The death toll is uncertain and remains under research. The massacre was little remembered outside the city for decades.

Greenwood Rising opened in 2021, on the centennial, at the corner of Greenwood Avenue and Archer Street. The rooms recreate a period barbershop, show holograms and projections about the days of violence and end in a space dedicated to the neighborhood's rebuilding and reflection.

On Greenwood Avenue, sidewalk plaques mark businesses that were destroyed and those that were rebuilt after 1921.
