About First Americans Museum
The First Americans Museum opened in 2021 on the banks of the Oklahoma River, southeast of downtown Oklahoma City. It tells the history and culture of the 39 Indigenous nations headquartered in the state, many of which were forcibly relocated from other regions in the 19th century.
The galleries were developed in partnership with the nations themselves. They address origins, forced removals such as the Trail of Tears, life on reservations, and contemporary cultures, using objects, films, music, and personal testimonies. Part of the collection came through a loan agreement with the National Museum of the American Indian, Smithsonian Institution.
The building and grounds follow circular forms, linked to the cosmologies of several peoples. Beside it, an earthen mound about 27 meters high, aligned with the sun on equinoxes and solstices, can be climbed on foot and offers views of the river and downtown.
The museum includes a restaurant serving Indigenous cuisine and an art shop featuring works by the nations.
