The city
Capital of Rhode Island, at the northern tip of Narragansett Bay, founded in 1636. The downtown has early-20th-century commercial buildings and the marble statehouse on the hill. Rivers uncovered in the 1990s form the Riverwalk, the setting for the WaterFire bonfires. Across the river, College Hill houses Brown University, the Rhode Island School of Design museum, and Benefit Street, with colonial houses.
