About Mystic Seaport Museum
Mystic Seaport Museum was founded in 1929 by local residents intent on preserving the region’s maritime history and occupies about 8 hectares along the Mystic River on former shipyard land. It is one of the largest maritime museums in the United States.
The 19th-century village, assembled from more than 60 historic buildings, many brought from other New England towns, includes sail lofts, ropewalks and cooperages, a ship’s store, a church, a pharmacy and a school. Staff give demonstrations of traditional port trades, such as rope making and blacksmith work.
The best-known vessel is the Charles W. Morgan, an 1841 whaler that made dozens of voyages around the world and is the last remaining wooden ship of its kind. Visitors go below decks to the holds and crew quarters. Docked nearby are the fishing schooner L. A. Dunton, the training schooner Joseph Conrad and the small steam launch Sabino, which runs short river cruises during the season.
In the restoration shipyard, shipwrights work on boat conservation using traditional techniques, and a planetarium shows how navigators used the stars to find their way.
