About Waiʻānapanapa State Park
Waiʻānapanapa State Park is about 5 km north of the village of Hana, at the end of the road to Hana. The name means “water that shines,” referring to freshwater pools inside lava tubes. The coast is dark volcanic rock, covered with native vegetation and hala trees, whose leaves are used for traditional Hawaiian weaving.
Pāʻina Beach, in a small cove, has black sand made of lava fragments. The sea often has strong currents and heavy surf, and swimming is recommended only when the ocean is calm. Around the cove there are sea arches, a blowhole where the ocean jets up, and caves that are reached by a short path.
According to legend, a princess named Pōpōalaea hid in one of those caves to escape her jealous husband, who found and killed her; at certain times the water turns reddish, traditionally linked to her blood and, scientifically, to small shrimp.
The park preserves a section of Ke Ala Loa, the stone pathway that once circled the island, opened by order of ancient chiefs. The trail follows the coast toward Hana, passing archaeological sites.
