About Bernheim Forest

The Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest covers a large area of hills and woods in Clermont, about 20 km from Bardstown. It was created in the 1920s by Isaac W. Bernheim, a German immigrant who made his fortune in whiskey, and is open to the public as a nature reserve.

The arboretum area has tree collections, lakes and lawns. The larger forest is crossed by trails of various lengths and a scenic drive. A suspended walkway extends over the tree canopy, about 23 meters above the ground.

Younger visitors often look for the Forest Giants, three huge sculptures of recycled wood created by Danish artist Thomas Dambo and scattered through the forest on easily accessible trails.

The visitor center provides trail maps and information about the wildlife and the seasons.
