About Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral
When the Diocese of Bardstown was created in 1808, the small Kentucky town became the seat of a territory that extended from the Great Lakes to the South. St. Joseph Cathedral, completed in 1819, was the first Catholic cathedral built west of the Appalachian Mountains.
The diocesan seat was moved to Louisville in 1841, and the church became known as a proto-cathedral; it later received the title of minor basilica. It remains an active parish.
The façade has brick columns and a tower. Inside, the columns are whole tree trunks, covered with plaster and painted. The walls hold paintings brought from Europe in the early 19th century, some attributed to donations from French and Italian nobles and clergy.
The church is a few steps from Bardstown’s central square, surrounded by brick houses from the same era.
