About Red Rock Canyon
Red Rock Canyon is about 25 km west of Las Vegas center and is a national conservation area managed by the Bureau of Land Management, the federal public-lands agency. The striking feature is the sandstone cliffs banded in red, orange and white rising above the desert and capped by the scarp of the Keystone Thrust, where older rocks were pushed over younger ones.
A one-way scenic road of about 21 km loops through the area and has viewpoints and parking for trails. The most popular trails lead to the Calico Hills cliffs, to canyons with springs such as Ice Box Canyon, and to rock art and petroglyphs. Climbers come from around the world for the sandstone routes.
At the visitor center, panels explain the geology and desert life; with luck you may see wild burros and desert tortoises, which are protected. The area has opening hours and at certain times of year may require a timed reservation to drive the scenic road.
In summer the heat is intense from early on: start hikes at dawn and carry plenty of water.
