About Fremont Street Experience

Fremont Street was Las Vegas’s first main street. From the 1930s and 1940s it housed the city’s earliest casinos, with neon signs that made downtown famous, like the cowboy Vegas Vic. When the big hotels moved to the Strip, downtown lost foot traffic, and in the 1990s five blocks of the street were turned into a pedestrian mall under a large curved canopy.

That canopy is an LED light screen about 400 meters long called Viva Vision. At night it presents light-and-music shows at regular intervals, and the mall hosts stages with bands, street performers and a zip line running beneath the screen. Casinos and bars stay open on both sides.

A few blocks away, the Fremont East District gathers bars, restaurants and murals in a more local neighborhood. The Neon Museum, where retired signs are kept, is about ten minutes by car.

Fremont Street is a good counterpoint to the Strip: more compact, older and easy to walk in one evening.
