About Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes

The Mesquite Flat dunes lie in the middle of Death Valley, near Stovepipe Wells, and are the easiest dunes to visit in the park. Wind that descends from the surrounding mountains piles sand into a dune field with crests up to about 30 meters, among mesquite shrubs, the plant that gives the place its name.

There is no marked trail: from the parking area, each visitor chooses their route along the crests. The highest dune is about 1.5 km away, and walking on soft sand is more tiring than it seems. In the morning the sand holds tracks of small nocturnal animals such as lizards, beetles, and foxes.

The dunes have been used as a film location, including scenes from Star Wars. The sand becomes extremely hot in summer, and wind can raise sandstorms.

It’s a good spot for sunrise and sunset, when shadows sculpt the crests.
