By car from Reno via NV-431, the Mount Rose Highway, about 50 minutes (55 km). From Tahoe City, California, it’s about 25 km along the north shore. Local buses connect the towns on the north shore.

One day lets you see Sand Harbor and the lake’s east shore. With two days, include Thunderbird Lodge and forest hikes.
When to go
From July to September for the beaches and the lake water, which is usually cold even in summer. In winter, the Mount Rose Highway leads to ski areas and requires attention for snow.

Do you need a car?
Yes, for the lake’s east shore and the Mount Rose Highway. In summer, there are buses to Sand Harbor at certain times.
