About White Pass and Yukon Route

The White Pass & Yukon Route was built between 1898 and 1900 to carry prospectors and cargo from Skagway to the Yukon River, on the way to the Klondike gold fields in Canada. Before it existed, prospectors climbed on foot, carrying tons of supplies, via steep trails. Built on rocky terrain and through harsh winters, the line overcame about 32 km of ascent to reach the White Pass gorge at 879 meters.

The railroad is narrow gauge, which allowed tighter curves on the slopes. In 1994 it was recognized as an international civil engineering landmark. The tracks reach Whitehorse in Yukon, but the most popular tourist section climbs from Skagway to the top of the gorge and returns.

The train departs from downtown Skagway, beside the cruise ship pier, and climbs the Skagway River valley, passing waterfalls, wooden and steel bridges, tunnels and viewpoints over the cliffs. From above you can see the marks of the trail used by prospectors. At the border the train stops and returns; trips that continue into Canada require entry documents for that country.

The cars are restored or replica vintage-style coaches, with open platforms between them from which to photograph the landscape.
